Afraid of the Holy Spirit?

This week I have been chewing over this observation I have – and all kinds of situations have arisen to confirm that my observation largely runs true . . . it is that most people are afraid of the Holy Spirit.tHE hOLY spIRIT - awesome

Why is that?

There are probably more reasons than I am about to list, but in the culture I live these three reasons seem prevalent.

  1. People have been raised in church environments where the Holy Spirit has been largely ignored or allowed to remain almost a complete mystery or dumped into the “too-hard-to-understand” third person of God basket and left there.
  2. Fear rules our streets and our homes – thus, the Third Person of God is too scary to think about or entertain in ones life – at all. It amazes me that in a culture that flocks to horror movies to be fed more fear we cant say to God “hey God, introduce me to Your Spirit, and help me get to know Him”
  3. Believing in God is culturally acceptable – so much so that not many people bat an eyelid when Faith is mentioned. But if you mention The Holy Spirit everything changes, even amongst Christians.  Because He and His domain, His dispensation in the history of the planet are right here, right now – and if we accept that fact everything changes and shifts towards doing things God’s way – the way Jesus led us to.  And most people think God’s way is horrendously boring – something to run away from.  WRONG!

Here are a few facets of the character and purpose of the Holy Spirit.

  • Firstly – He is not an “it” – He is a person, He is he or him.
  • He’s infinitely holy, infinitely wise, infinitely mighty and infinitely tender. (R.A. Torrey)
  • He’s the comforter
  • He’s the great counsellor
  • He’s the empowerer of our lives and the gift inside us.
  • It’s His anointing on our lives that breaks bad stuff (struggles) off our shoulders and out of our hearts
  • He’s the bearer of amazing spiritual gifts.  Designed to free and empower others.
  • He’s the evoker of wonderful fruit in our lives.  Designed to create conduits of the Love of Heaven through our lives!
  • He’s our GPS.
  • He’s Heaven’s Gentleman.
  • I mean – what’s not to like about Him

While we’re scared of Him we simply miss out on all of the above – and to be honest our worship of God is incomplete if we’re not in a relationship with Him.

Are we going remain scared of Him?

Heck no!

God is amazing!
