Look Up – Look Forward

inspired by both Pastor Phil Pringle and God!

Catch yourself from looking down all the time.  Catch yourself from looking backward all the time.  Make a point of looking up!

Rudyard Kipling captured the plight of downward sight in the Jungle Book writings and Mowgli had asked of the Bandar-log or monkeys (this is from my scratchy memory Ok) something like ”why is man or men so easy to attack (or similar)” – the Bandar-log replies something like “oh that’s easy, he never looks up!”

Looking up and forward can be completely forgotten by being consumed with looking down – being completely focused and consumed with what’s right in front of us.

Check this out . . .

Psalm 121:1-2  (NKJV)     Mount Taranaki Egmont NZ

I will lift up my eyes to the hills— From whence comes my help?
My help comes from the Lord,  Who made heaven and earth.

God’s always lifting our head . . . so we can look up and forward . . . the Bible is full of this type of “high-place”, “wide-vista” thing – to combat our tendency to look down . . .

A “city set on a hill” – the church’s position

“Standing on the ramparts” – keeping vigilant watch over the great vista of life

“looking to the mountains / the hill” – where every blessing flows, and our help comes from.

“lift your heads and the King of Glory will come right in!” – wow, don’t we want that!

And all the hope that comes with it!

I grew up backing into hill country around Wellington city in New Zealand – I know what those views can look like – sensational.  How looking up and looking out can affect your whole being.  One direction the city and harbor bristling with people, slightly to the right, the mountains of the South Island’s northeast, seemingly so close, to the right again, never ending hills rolling into the curved distance, right again, beyond the horizon, Mount Taranaki impossibly hovering over the sea like an artist had painted it in the sky.   The views keep you dreaming and hoping and knowing there is so much more of life than that which is right in front of you.  The hills seem like a never ending vista of God’s hope and vision for your life.

Look up and Look Forward – God’s the lifter of our heads, because he wants us to catch what He’s got coming our way!

Be excited and empowered by hope and vision – all arriving from God.

God is amazing!
