Can You Do All Things? Really?

This scripture is wonderful . . . but as with any scripture we need to check out what it means, rather than just mouth it out like some cliché!  Or magic Christian wand (or is that Christian magic wand?)?

 

Philippians 4:13 (NKJV)

¹³I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Firstly, is it Jesus who is our first and uppermost source of strength, or are we in the habit of going to Him once we’ve worn out our own resources?

 

We can mean the best, but if we have Jesus first on our list or right at the top of our “doing life” totem, this scripture will unfold it’s truth into every circumstance or situation.

“Every situation” means just that, the great moments and the ugly ones where we seem to be on the rough end of life’s big stick.

If we look back at the verse before, we see two scenarios being covered.  I mean Paul wrote to the church of Philippi from incarceration!  Yup Jail, in Rome.

 

Aha, now it starts to all make sense . . .

 

Philippians 4:12 (NIV)

¹²I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.

 

Aha . . . he’s learned the secret of being content – whether full or hungry, plenty or lack – because his trust and first resource is Jesus.

I think after all these years, I’m starting to get all this wonderful stuff!
